The network of the scientific institutions of the republic consists of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research of Russian Academy of Sciences, Kalmyk Institute of Social, Economic and Legal Studies, Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture, Kalmyk State University, Republic Teacher Training Institute, Institute for Training of Agricultural Workers and 9 affiliates of state and private universities along with the Branches of All Russian Institute of Irrigation and Land Improvement, Architectural Institute "YuzhNIIgiprozem", Kalmyk laboratory of Caspian Institute of Fishing Industries.

Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research of Russian Academy of Sciences is the scientific center studying, reproducing and preserving the historical and cultural heritage, linguistic and ethnic realities, arts and spiritual traditions of Kalmyk people. The institute deals with the development of key aspects of Kalmyk language, oral ethnic tradition, classical and contemporary literature, political, economic and ethnic history of Kalmykia.
In its scientific, financial and economic activities the institute is guided by the Federal Law of the Russian Federation "On science and state scientific and technical policies ", resolutions of the administrative board, resolutions and decrees of the Russian Academy of Sciences, decrees of the President and Government of the Republic of Kalmykia as well as charters of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research. The charter of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research (status of the state institution) was registered on December 20, 1999, approved by the controlling organization, Russian Academy of Sciences. Practical activities of the scientific and research institution conform to the aims and tasks outlined in the charter of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research.
The institute consists of six large scientific subdivisions: department of history with three sectors, history of Kalmykia, ethnic studies and archaeology; department of language studies; department of literature and folklore with two sectors, literature and folklore; department of Mongolic studies, scientific center "Jangar" and the Center for Ethnic Social Studies. There is a number of auxiliary scientific entities: scientific library, scientific archive, scripture fund, laboratory of scientific, technical and information support. The book storage of the institute holds mostly rare and especially valuable publications. In 1999 the Zaya Pandit Museum of Kalmyk Traditional Culture was established and accepted to the system of museums of Russian Academy of Sciences.
The scientists of the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research take active part in the scientific forums, including the Permanent International Altaic Conference, International Congress of Mongolic Studies, International Seminars of Tibetan Studies, etc.
The Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research has many times initiated and organized scientific conferences in various fields of humanities (International Conference "Jangar" and Problems of Ethnic Arts" (1990), All Russian Conference "Languages of the Peoples of Russia" (1993), The first organizational congress of Russian Oriental Studies "Domestic Oriental Studies on the threshold of 21st Century" (1997), International Scientific Conference dedicated to the 400 anniversary of the founder of the Oyrat literacy "Todo Bichig" ("Clear Script") Zaya Pandit and 390 anniversary of the voluntary entrance of Kalmyk people to Russia " (1999), International Scientific Conference "Buddhist Culture and World Civilization at the threshold of third millennium ", 2000 ã).
Carried out the work in writing the fundamental research "History of Kalmykia from the ancient times to the present". In 2000 the group of the authors worked on volume 1 of the "History of Kalmykia". In 2001 they prepared the main sections of volume 1 of the "History of Kalmykia" dedicated to the earliest stages of the Kalmyk history.
In 1999 the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research opened the Miseum of the outstanding scholar, creator of Kalmyk script Zaya Padit Namkaijamtso. In 2000 the museum was transformed into Zaya Pandit Museum of Kalmyk Traditional Culture, its development concept was approved by the Museum Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The support of the Department of History and the Museum Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences it received the academic status.
One of the main tasks of the philology department is the realization of the Law "On languages in the Republic of Kalmykia" and the state program of the Republic of Kalmykia on restoration and development of Kalmyk language. Therefore a important emphasis is put on the creation of lexicography basis and much attention is given to the preparation and publication of dictionaries.
In conformity with the license for educational activities in the sphere of professional education 24N-0432 issued on March 31, 2000, the institute carries out preparation of specialists on the program of post-university education. In 2000 the Kalmyk Institute for Humanities Research started offering the post graduate degrees in three fields: "Domestic History", "Languages of the Peoples of Russian Federation (Kalmyk language)", "Languages of the Countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, America and Australia (Mongolic languages)".
During 1996-2002 the specialists of the institute released 46 books on the most important problems of ethnic genesis of Mongolic peoples, emergence and development of their state systems, development of the ethnic consciousness, national languages and cultures, their history in Medieval age and until now.
The Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture works in the field of the agricultural sector.
The Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture was started as a Kalmyk State Agricultural Experimental Station organized in 1926. In 1967 the station was reorganized into the Kalmyk Research Institute of Meat Cattle Breeding. Since 1983 and until now the institute has been in the system of Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences. In 1992 the Research Institute of Meat Cattle Breeding was renamed into the Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture.
It carries the work on improvement of the productive qualities of the fine-fleeced breeds of sheep. For this purpose was created the Kalmyk type of the Groznenskaya breed of sheep. The sheep of this type have a better accommodation to the deserted conditions of the Kalmyk steppe.
The scientists of the Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture have created the selection group of black karakul sheep.
The republic possesses a unique Kalmyk breed of cows, its meat has no qualitative matches in the world. The institute carries out the work on improving of this breed.
One of the priorities in the activities of the institute is the seed growing of crops and forage.
There is also work on the improvement of technology preventing desertification of Chernye Zemli.
The institute promotes the scientific knowledge and the advanced experience, published methods, technologies, recommendations, plans of the selection and breeding works.
The structure of the institute has the following subdivisions: division of sheep breeding and restoration of traditional cattle breeding, department of land cultivation, seed growing and fodders, department of economy, mathematic analysis and propaganda, veterinary laboratory, laboratory of selection and technologies of meat cattle breeding.
The Kalmyk Institute of Social, Economic and Legal Studies was established on July 23, 1999, by the Resolution of the Government of the Republic of Kalmykia in order to carry out complex social and economic studies of the regional level, ensuring the stable development, political and social stability, scientific programs of utilizing the natural resources of the Republic of Kalmykia.
The research is carried out on the following main directions: economy, ecology, legislation and social studies. Besides the institute includes two state entities: Scientific Center of Space Monitoring and Laboratory of Preservation and Use of Historical Cultural and Natural Monuments.
The main objective of the Center of Space Monitoring is obtaining of the space information by the corresponding reception stations with processing and scientific analysis. Such natural and environmental monitoring is carried out on the basis of materials of the remote Earth probes of the Russian territory and territories of the neighboring states. The center works under the management of RosAviaKosmos and is part of the territorial distributed network.
The government of the Republic of Kalmykia, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russian Aerospace Agency, State Scientific Center "Priroda" and the Kalmyk Institute of Social, Economic and Legal Studies have adopted the joint program of systematic aerospace methods of geological evaluation, environment security and utilization of oil and gas deposits.
